Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a non-destructive testing method that uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws or discontinuities in materials. It is commonly used in industrial applications to inspect welds, castings, forgings, and other structural components for cracks, voids, inclusions, and other defects.

In UT, a transducer is used to generate high-frequency sound waves that are directed into the material being inspected. The sound waves travel through the material and are reflected back to the transducer when they encounter a change in material properties, such as a crack or void. The transducer detects the reflected waves and converts them into an electrical signal, which is then analyzed by an instrument to determine the presence, size, shape, and location of the defect.

UT is a versatile and sensitive method that can detect a wide range of flaws, from very small to large defects. It is also capable of determining the depth of a flaw, making it a useful method for inspecting materials of varying thicknesses. UT is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing to ensure the quality and safety of materials and components.

There are two main types of UT: pulse-echo UT and through-transmission UT. In pulse-echo UT, the transducer both sends and receives the sound waves, while in through-transmission UT, two transducers are used, one to send the sound waves and the other to receive them. Both methods have their advantages and are chosen based on the specific requirements of the inspection.
